We have not revisited College Lake as a group since the renovations and developments were completed earlier this year. College Lake is one of BBOWT's prestige nature reserves with a new Visitor Centre and large bird hide together with many other wildlife attractions. We are hoping to arrange a guided tour of the area. For BBOWT members entry is free for others there may be a small charge. College Lake is on the B489 between Tring and Ivinghoe. OS Explorer Map 181 ref SP935139. Lunch afterwards at the Valiant Trooper, Aldbury. Meet in the College Lake car park at 10:00. Please let us know if you are coming and staying for lunch (which will be chosen beforehand)
Monday, 27 September:  A visit to Ruislip Lido & Woods. Leader: Bob, email:
Ruislip Woods is an area of ancient woodland in the London Borough of Hllingdon surrounding Ruislip Lido lake. Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve is 700 acres of ancient woodland that once provided timber for the building of Windsor Castle and the great battleships of the past. Today the woods and lido offer a haven for recreation and wildlife. We will be taking a walk of approximately 2.5 miles. Please meet at 10:30 at the Ruislip Lido Car Park, Reservoir Road, Ruislip, HA4 7TU which is just off Ducks Hill Road. (Grid Reference: TQ089892). Lunch will be at The Gate pub in Northwood - location and menu will be circulated nearer the date. Please let the Leader know if you are coming and staying for lunch.
Tuesday, 5 October:  "Bees and Sniffer Bees at Rothampstead" - Jill & Peter, Details above.
Michael Davey has arranged for Chris Beale, who has worked for Incentinal Ltd at Rothampstead Research Station for 4 years, to come and talk to us about how they have developed a hand held sniffer machine containing 6 to 36 worker bees. These are trained to detect a whole range of substances e.g. explosives, drugs, rotten fruit, dry rot etc. Come along and see how the bees are cared for and put through their paces. They are better than trained dogs. There may be a small charge on entry. Meet in the Pottery Room at 10:00.
Friday, 26 November: "Life in a nutshell" - Jill & Peter, Details above.
We are delighted to welcome John Tyler for this illustrated talk on "the small things which can be found locally in woodland and grassland". This is the meeting we have shared very successfully with the Ornithology Groups in previous years and when we bring sufficient food to have a finger buffet in the interval. There will; be a charge of £1.50 per head on entry. Meet in the Barn Hall for 20:00. Please let us know if you are coming and whether you will be bringing "sweet or savoury" to share.
A Date for your diary - Monday, 20 December - Wildlife Group "Get Together" (afternoon) Details later.
