Arrangements for Walks

Please note: The Walking Group does walks of 4-6 miles in length. For details of longer walks, please see Striders Group. For easier walks at a slow pace, for those who cannot manage the Walking Group walks, please see Strollers Group.

Note for New Members : Walks , including ‘Free for All’ walks, are for members of the Walking Group only.

If you would like to join the Walking Group, please talk to the Convenor at a U3A monthly meeting, or telephone the Convenor, and fill in our questionnaire. We can often arrange for you to come with other members for the first time, if you would like to. Our walks are on uneven and sometimes hilly ground and paths are often muddy, so proper footwear is essential. You should be used to walking at least 4 miles at a good pace. Suitable warm and waterproof clothing is often necessary - we do not cancel in case of rain.

IMPORTANT: Apart from those walks marked 'Free for All'' please remember to contact the Leader to book a place and say if you are staying for lunch: some pubs are a bit particular about how many people are arriving for lunch and how many are parking in their car-park and we have to respect their wishes, so if the leaders tell you they cannot take any more, please do not embarrass them by coming anyway. If you are on the list but you can't come after all - or if you can't stay to lunch after all - please let the leader know beforehand, even on the day, as it may enable someone else to go: it is disappointing for the leaders and other members if those on the waiting list don't get a chance to take someone's place. Walks do get booked up very early, but people often drop out nearer the time and you may well get on a walk if your name is on the waiting list.

Members accept lifts and come on walks at their own risk and should be responsible for their own safety when crossing roads or climbing stiles and carry their own simple first-aid kit, water etc.

The garden is about ¾ acre, beautifully kept, with many hidden corners and a small wildflower meadow beyond. The cost of entry is £3 (payable individually on entry). Tea, scones and cake are available at extra cost if you wish and there are plenty of places to sit down for a while. Numbers on the walk have to be strictly limited as the garden is also open to the public that day. Please meet near the entrance to the Bucks Goat Centre, in Old Risborough Road, off the A4010 south of Stoke Mandeville, OS map GR SP833096: plenty of room to park along this quiet side-road. Fairly energetic walk undulating through peaceful beechwoods and pretty valleys (only one stile)! Thursday 28 August:

‘Flying the Admiral’s Flag’ – approx 4 miles. Leader: Janice, email:
This is a repeat of the walk we did at the end of April when it was very damp! Not quite a ‘Free for All’ but I can take up to 30 people, which is a large number anyway. This is a hilly area with lovely views on a clear day. Please meet at the Blue Flag pub, apparently named after Admiral Nelson’s pennant, on the B482 about midway between Lane End and Stokenchurch, OS map 171, GR SU777931. (One possible route is to turn off at junction 5 of the M40, go through Stokenchurch village and turn right onto the B482.) Please park as far away from the entrance as possible and allow time to order lunch before setting out, if you have not already done so by email. NB: the only parking is at the pub, so please arrange to stop for lunch or at least a drink. Start time: 10.15.

Monday, 1 September:

'Circular walk from Cuddington' - 5 miles. Leader: Althea, email:
Attractive scenery & wide views (if clear) of the Thame river valley, across undulating ridges recording old patterns of Ridge & Furrow farming. A number of stiles, but no steep hills. Park at the south end of Cuddington, in the lane leading to St Nicholas’s church: the lane is on the right, immediately after the Crown pub. Cuddington is off the A418, south-east of Aylesbury, OS Map 181, GR SP738112. Please share cars as parking is limited. We drive a short distance to Dinton for lunch at The Seven Stars in Star Lane. Walk starts from outside the church. Start time: 10.00.

Thursday, 4 September:

‘Our England is a Garden II..’ – 3.5 miles (but see below). Leader: Janice, email:
A morning Coffee Pot Walk of about 3.5 miles near to Marlow Common, with a visit to a private garden en route, which will add extra time and distance to the outing. The garden is 5 acres with fantastic country views, a large water garden and interesting sculptures. Entry costs £4 and coffee & cake are available at extra cost (in aid of NSPCC) if you wish. Please park in the parking area at the entrance to Pullingshill Wood, OS map 172, GR SU822865. One way to approach it is to take the Frieth Road turning off the A4155 in Marlow (turn at Platts Garage). Go past the Bovingdon Green turn-off and take the next left, which is Marlow Common. After about ½ mile, turn left at the junction and about ¼ mile further on again look for a rough parking area on your right, with a green metal gate beyond it and a Woodland Trust sign saying Pullingshill Wood (not the parking area you reach first, which has a sign about World War 2 trenches!). Please share cars if possible and park here close together, as it is a small area. NO LUNCH will be arranged, so those who wish can get back in time for the General Meeting. Start time: 9.45.

Monday 8 September:

‘Over the Top to the Bottom – and Back!’ - 5 miles. Leader: Anita (see below for booking arrangements)
