Current Programme

Another great programme of walks, thanks to all who offered to be leaders, especially Gill who is leading her first walk. For the first time since the Striders group was formed, we didn’t have to send a ‘reminder’ email about the newsletter deadline!

Where no email address is given, please see the current newsletter for leaders' contact details.

Tuesday, 5 August:  'A Dash through the Woods at West Wycombe' - 8.5 miles. Leader: John, email:
This walk is described as quite energetic but nothing particularly steep or strenuous, nonetheless, I assume no liability. It links three NT properties and passes through woodland and open country, with fine views. The final stretch, after lunch at Bradenham, is the best part, as always. Meet in the car park adjoining the garden centre just at the West End of West Wycombe. Turn right off the A40, below the golden ball of the Dashwood Mausoleum, on the road to Bledlow Ridge and Chinnor, signposted Hellfire Caves and Garden Centre. The free car park entrance is on the left, several yards along a high flint wall. OS Map 172, GR SU826947. Start time: 10.15.
Thursday, 14 August:

‘Brian’s Summer Walk’ - approx 10 miles. Leader: Brian, email:
This time we walk backwards to “Ttarras”. A slight deviation from our regular route which will entail a steep climb up the valley towards The Boot pub for lunch. I will endeavour not to lead you astray this time and for those who are that way inclined, we will be stopping off at the Watercress Farm on the way back.  Please meet at the Westwood Park (free) car park which is off Chenies Ave, Little Chalfont, OS Map 172, GR SU996980.  Start time: 10.30.

Friday, 22 August:

‘Chiltern Village Hop’ - 8 miles. Leaders: Gill and Karen, email:
We shall be visiting four delightful Chiltern villages on this walk. Level walking apart from the initial slog up to Coleshill (not up Gore Hill!) and the descent into Little Missenden. Please park in the public car park off the Broadway in Old Amersham, OS Map 172, GR SU960973.  We shall assemble near the toilets.  Start time: 10.15.

Tuesday, 26 August:

‘Nuffield and Hailey’ - approx 9 miles. Leaders: Vic and Brenda, email:
The walk visits some of the remotest countryside in the Chilterns with fine views of the Berkshire Downs, Vale of the White Horse and the Oxfordshire Plain. Nothing too strenuous with nice pub for lunch. Park on the verge near the golf club, OS Map 171, GR SU670873. Please car share if possible as parking is limited.  Start time: 10.00.

Friday, 5 September:

‘Woods, Water and Wildlife’ - 11 miles. Leaders: John and Peggy , email:
We start at Hambleden and follow the Shakespeare’s Way through woods and countryside to the outskirts of Marlow. The route drops down to the Thames at Temple Lock and on to Hurley for lunch. In the afternoon we follow the Thames Path west to Hambleden Lock and then back to the start at Hambleden village, Please park in the free car park just past the Stag Inn, Hambleden village, OS Map 171, GR SU785866.  Start time: 10.00. This walk was postponed from 3 June.

Wednesday, 10 September:

‘Cats and Maidens’ - 8 miles. Leader: Janice, email:
Some hills, but wonderful views, particularly from the pub where we stop for lunch. Please meet at the green near Catslip, which is a small village just off the A423 near Henley-on-Thames, OS Map 171, GR SU709868. If you take the A4130 northwest from Henley, before you reach Nettlebed you will see a signpost to Catslip on your right. Take this road, which is very narrow; when you reach the houses, fork left and follow the road to the open green, shown on the map as Crocker End. Please spread out to park around the green/common area, without inconveniencing the residents - there is plenty of space and it is less intrusive if we are not all outside one house!  Start time: 10.15.

Monday, 15 September:

‘Along the Canal and up into the Woods’ - 9 miles. Leaders: Ruth and Jeremy, email:
Easy walking along the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal, where we hope to see plenty of wildlife, and on through Wendover, then a long trek up Boddington Hill to have lunch in the Café in the Woods. Please meet in the village hall car park in Halton village - go over the canal bridge and take the next turning on the right, which is Old School Close (the village hall sign is obscured by tree branches), OS Map 181, GR SP874102. Start time: 10.15

Friday, 26 September:

‘The Long and Winding Road’ - 10.5 miles. Leader: Nigel, email:
This is a fairly flat walk starting at Owlswick and then passing through Longwick, Henton and round to Towersey for lunch at the Three Horseshoes. The morning section is just under 7 miles with (sadly) quite a few stiles. After lunch it’s virtually ‘stile free’, taking us through Ilmer and back to the starting point. Please meet in the car park behind the disused pub in Owlswick, OS Map 181, GR SP790063. Start time: 10.00.

Wednesday, 1 October:

‘London Walk’ - 8.5 miles. Leader: Andrew, email:
We shall be walking from Limehouse to Little Venice along the Regent’s Canal and having lunch in Chapel Market where there are a number of stalls, cafes etc. Meet at Amersham Station at 09.30.

Friday, 17 October:

‘From the Trenches to the Thames’  - approx 9 miles. Leader: Lesley, email:
Plateaux and valleys, with woods in places, some riverside walking, not too strenuous. Meet at Marlow Bottom car park, off the A4155 at Hooks Corner, just west of Marlow in Pullinghill Woods, OS Map 172, GR SU823863. Start time: 10.00.

Friday, 24 October:

‘Wendover Woods to Cholesbury and back’ - approx 9.7 miles. Leaders: Hugh and Margaret, email:
This walk through woods and across fields has some fine views as well as autumn colours.  It does involve a couple of steepish climbs but there are relatively few stiles. A few short sections may be rather muddy if there has been heavy rain. Meet in the ‘pay and display’ car park (£3 in coins to get a ticket from the machine just after you have entered Wendover Woods) near the Café in the Woods, OS Map 181, GR SP888091. There are public toilets near the café. Start time: 10.00.

Wednesday, 29 October:

‘88 Metres up to Ivinghoe’ - 7 miles. Leader: John , email:
A walk along the edge of the Chiltern escarpment to its highest point at Ivinghoe, with lunch en route in Aldbury. Inevitably some steep climbs but much easy walking with spectacular views in all directions, weather permitting.  One or two stiles only, some superficially muddy patches when wet. Meet in the NT car park on the Icknield Way, easily reached by going just under 2 miles north from Aldbury village green. The car park is on the left, opposite a finger post pointing to Ivinghoe Beacon and the Ridgeway path to the right, OS Map 181, GR SP955149. This is a repeat of John’s walk last November.  Start time: 10.15.

Monday, 3 November:

‘Cholesbury’ - up to 8 miles. Leader: Andrew, email:
A delightful walk around the Bucks/Herts border. Pub for lunch to be decided. Meet in the car park on Cholesbury Common by the cricket club, OS Map 181, GR SP933072. Start time: 10.15.
