Activities

At our May and June Meetings we continued our exploration of the history of India and the British Raj. Several members gave very interesting and informative talks and, of course, we included the Indian Mutiny as well as event leading to partition. We were very fortunate that several members have visited or lived in India and could provide particular insights. In July we had a complete change of subject. Jim Lukmanji gave an illustrated talk on the Lunar Men of the 18th century and Philip Handscombe told us about the Six Frigates - a story of the birth of the United States Navy. After that we had a lively discussion on the teaching of history and the history curriculum for secondary school students, something which has been very much in recent news. We are never short of ideas for topics that we might study and we shall decide on our autumn programme in August and September. This may necessitate an 'alternative vote', which of course could lead to work on past reforms to Britain's electoral system. Our main subject in August, however, will be 'The Special Relationship'.
