The day was cold but the guided tour of Kenwood House and Hampstead Heath more than kept our thoughts on how lucky we are to have so much heritage on our doorstep and to appreciate the vagaries of past generations. As always Andrew Davies kept us amused with anecdotes and historical information. As a group we all left Kathy Brown's garden enthused and ready to do our hanging baskets. Would you believe it…she even washes her silver birches. Gardening gone too for! The coach trip to Buckingham Palace gardens and Ham House was truly inspirational. A wonderful day and the sun shone for us. The National Herb Garden visit was very informative and lots of tricks of the trade were shared with us. It was hard to resist the temptation to buy the herbs on display as there were so many healthy and unusual varieties. At Ryton we had a guided tour led by a wonderful man in his nineties and boy, could he put some of us to shame! He was as sprightly and mischievous as a youngster and just so knowledgeable about organic growing. His enthusiasm meant that our guided tour lasted twice as long and he would have happily continued to answer our questions and share more information if we had not had to get back on the coach for home.
