Time after the tour to explore the ‘Backs’ – gardens by the river Cam behind various colleges, visit some of the other colleges or museums for which this city is famous, or take a punt on the river. Price includes coach, driver’s tip, guided tour and entrance fees to Trinity & St John’s colleges. The historic ships include, sail, steam powered, and a cold war spy submarine. The newly opened No.1 Smithery contains fascinating maritime objects from National Collections, together with an exhibition of Stanley Spencer's 'Shipbuilding on the Clyde' paintings. Other buildings include the Royal Dockyard museum, RNLI historic lifeboat collection, the Commissioner's house & garden, the Dockyard railway museum, 3 Slip-'The Big Space', and the Victorian Ropery museum. Tuesday 19 October: LANCING COLLEGE CHAPEL & ENGLISH MARTYRS CHURCH. Cost £14.90pp. Leader: Joy . Leaving Chesham 08:45; Amersham 08:55.
Visit this magnificent building, the largest school chapel in the world, set on a hill in the lovely Sussex countryside. Our tour guide will show us the wonderful gothic chapel and its stained glass windows. Afterwards, the coach will take us to Worthing seafront where there are plenty of cafes/restaurants for lunch. Then on to nearby Goring for our guided tour of the English Martyrs church, famous for the reproduction of the Sistine chapel ceiling in Rome. This was painted by a local artist in the 20th century church and is two thirds the size of the original. There will be time to take photos of the ceiling and the wonderful modern stained glass windows. Please note: Although there are toilets at both churches, there are NO refreshments. Any drinks required must be taken with you. Cost includes coach, driver's tip and donations for entry and tours of both churches.
Tuesday 2 November:  OLYMPIC LONDON REVISITED. Cost £25.90pp. Leader: Bob.
This is a repeat of an earlier excursion where walking is kept to a minimum, and will enable you to witness how this exciting project is taking shape. After lunch (incl. in price), a drive through the Royal Docks, where we will see Excel (no further construction required). Then across the Thames to the Woolwich barracks (shooting), and onto Woolwich Arsenal to buy light refreshments if required. In addition to seeing the 2012 venues our Blue Badge guide will tell the fascinating story of the 1908 & 1948 Olympics, both on a strict budget.
